Nearly every one of us is under some amount of stress at some time or another, even daily, given the pressures of life today. From parenting and careers to finances and relationships, it seems that even with all of the advances in today’s society, things only get more stressful. While there are a lot of ways to relieve stress (exercising, meditation, yoga, etc.) did you know certain foods work well to fight stress? As a well-established Atlanta contract food services company, we’ll share a few secrets with you below.
Green leafy vegetables such as spinach and asparagus are rich in folate, and lower the risk of depression which is often associated with stress and/or anxiety. Folate assists in the body’s production of serotonin and dopamine, neurotransmitters that help regulate mood.
Berries contain antioxidants that help the brain produce dopamine. The antioxidants are what give blueberries and blackberries their color, and are known as anthocyanins. Many berries (especially blueberries) contain a substantial amount of vitamin C.
Dark chocolate can lower blood pressure, which typically goes up when people are under considerable stress. Dark chocolate is also responsible for producing anandamide, a compound that produces that “feel good” emotion when you eat dark chocolate, while temporarily reducing feelings of depression or pain.
Avocados include potassium, folate, vitamin E, B vitamins, and countless other nutrients that boost health. Avocados are also rich in glutathoione, a substance that effectively fights oxidative damage by blocking intestinal absorption of specific fats. Avocados not only help keep your mood on an even keel during stressful times, but they also help regulate blood sugar levels.
Foods rich in tryptophan such as nuts, pumpkin seeds, and turkey are good for calming those who are often argumentative or disagreeable, as tryptophan is an amino acid that converts to serotonin in the body. Another great source of tryptophan is free-range organic eggs.
