Our contract foodservices company in Atlanta has been around for decades, which means we’ve heard of almost everything when it comes to diets and “healthy” eating plans. In recent months the ‘keto’ diet (short for ‘ketogenic’) has been making the rounds in the news/headlines, but just what is it and should you try it or offer it up in corporate dining or the university cafeteria?
Of course we’d all love to lose weight or stay slim and trim while gorging on butter, ice cream, and other high-fat foods. Many have been praising the ketogenic diet for weight loss, but according to some dietitians and nutritionists, this isn’t such a good idea. Essentially the keto diet is super low-carb and high fat, but experts say the ultra low carbohydrates is too extreme and possibly even dangerous.
The keto diet is nothing new
While you may just now be hearing about it, the ketogenic diet has been around for nearly a century, and was originally created for treatment of seizures in epilepsy. It is effective for controlling seizures in some children, however adults shouldn’t use it for weight loss according to dietitians and nutritionists who describe the eating plan as one with mostly fat and a tiny amount of carbs and protein.
Foods on the diet, and those to avoid
You’ve probably already figured out that the ketogenic diet is all about eating fat – and lots of it. This may be in the form of mayo, butter, oils, and even leafy greens, vegetables, salmon, and other foods that are healthy but with a caveat – there’s oil, butter, or other fat with every meal, and carbohydrates are almost non-existent considering the diet restricts their intake to 2 to 4% of calories. This means nearly zero grains, breads, sweets, and pasta.
Lots of people today are touting the keto diet as the way to go for those who want to lose weight, and nutritionists say it works – but it’s extreme, and the weight will quickly come back because most people can’t fight the temptation to have a pastry, a piece of crusty bread, or chips and crackers for long.
The ketogenic diet lacks big time when it comes to nutrients, and isn’t advised for those who have diabetes or heart disease because it’s packed with fat.
Going to extremes to lose weight is never a good idea, and while some have the notion that the keto diet is super healthy, most dietitians don’t agree. The key to great health and a slim body is eating a variety of healthy foods including vegetables, fruits, healthy fats (fatty fish, olive oil, seeds, nuts), whole grains, lean meat, protein-rich foods like chicken or fish, and reducing refined carbohydrates.
