Lots of people love salads, and many eat them as a healthy alternative to burgers, pizza, and other foods. However, what begins as a healthy lunch at work can quickly turn into a disaster, calorie- and health-wise. There are some smart alternatives when it comes to building your salad!
Of course lettuce, tomatoes, spinach leaves, and broccoli are all good choices, but what then? When you load the top with ham, cheese, eggs, bacon bits, and that rich, creamy salad dressing it can quickly become a lunch that contains as much (or more) fat than that greasy burger. Here are a few smart pairings we think you’ll enjoy.
If you’re passionate about avocados, try something else instead. Top that crisp lettuce with pecans, red onion, and a lemon vinaigrette dressing for something that will excite your taste buds. Avocados are still a great choice unless you get “burned out” on them, as they’re packed with healthy, good-for-you fats.
A salad with radishes, cucumbers, and nuts topped with honey garlic vinaigrette is a delicious change, or how about red onion, mushrooms, and feta cheese topped with rosemary thyme vinaigrette?
Blueberries, cauliflower, sesame seeds, apples, even egg whites without the yolk – these can all add a new delicious “twist” to an ordinary salad. There are countless healthy dressing choices in addition to the above including balsamic vinaigrette, cilantro lime vinaigrette, and “light” versions of other dressings including ranch, Italian, etc.
Strawberries, chickpeas, bell pepper – there are countless tasty toppings you can use to liven up what may have otherwise been a dull, usual salad. Change it up often, and you’ll never grow tired of salads!
How do you make your salads more exciting? We’d love to hear your comments.
