Gourmet Services has been a top contract food services company in Atlanta for decades, so we know a few things about food – and healthier eating! As the percentage of the population wanting to eat healthier foods grows, it’s still difficult to figure out how to cut at least some of the fat, salt, and sugar without cutting out the taste as well. The good news? Whether in school cafeterias, hospitals, or corporate dining, you can enjoy delicious meals that are actually good for your health.
Too much sugar in the diet not only contributes to obesity, it also increases the risk for heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. Excess saturated fat clogs the arteries and also contributes to heart disease, high cholesterol, and obesity. What does salt do? While it’s important to have a little salt in the diet, too much can result in hypertension (high blood pressure), another condition that affects heart health. So, how can you eat healthier without sacrificing taste?
First, realize that processed and pre-packaged foods often have high levels of sugar, salt, or saturated fat. This is why it is so important to read labels! Considering this fact, by preparing your own meals using fresh ingredients you have far more control over what goes into your food. There are lots of spices and healthy oils you can use in preparing foods that add taste without making your diet unhealthy.
What foods should be included in meal plans? Fresh vegetables, whole grains, fruits, dairy products that are low-fat or fat-free, eggs, beans and lentils, nuts, fish, chicken, turkey, and lean meats.
Does healthy eating mean you have to leave off the fried or mashed potatoes? Not necessarily, but how they’re prepared makes the difference. For instance, mashed potatoes made using fat-free or low-fat milk and butter are much healthier than the traditional variety. Spice up the flavor with Mrs. Dash and just a small pinch of salt. When you’re craving fried potatoes, cut up into chunks or wedges, coat with olive oil, and cook in the oven.
There are countless ways to prepare your favorite foods without including tons of sugar, salt, or saturated fat. Given how easy it is to access information online about eating healthier, there is no reason to make choices that are bad for your health!
