Independence Day is our day to celebrate our freedom as a nation. It’s a time for us to show appreciation for what our forefathers endured and our soldier’s abroad face everyday to protect our nations liberty. As Americans, yearly, millions of us fire up our grills on the 4th of July. Even though it’s a holiday, our healthy traditions don’t have to take the day off. Many of us associate holidays with eating unhealthy or, we parallel food with fun. Some of us choose to eat and drink more or just pause our diet and/or workout routine as a whole. Many of us who are attending 4th of July cookouts or parties, are already planning to eat any and everything. Hotdogs, hamburgers, sugary drinks, alcohol, unhealthy salads and desserts are typical 4th of July staples. Holiday parties can always be difficult for those of us attempting to focus on maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
One of our favorite 4th of July pastimes is grilling outside; enjoying summer foods while assembled with friends and family under the sun. Some grilled options aren’t exactly the healthiest though, however that doesn’t mean that we can’t enjoy our grilled favorites or an alternative prepared over charcoals. Most proteins are healthy grilled, as long as they’re the leaner slices. When hosting a holiday cookout, keep in mind that what we grill is much more significant than how we grill it. Burgers can unfortunately be high in unhealthy saturated fat and should be thought as a special treat. Turkey burgers however, cut down on saturated fat while keeping that meaty flavor we crave, plus turkey is a good source of niacin, vitamin B6, and zinc. Making veggie patties or quinoa and white or black bean burgers are a flavorful option for our vegetarian and vegan guest. Veggie patties are a relaxed way to acclimate our list of options to any of our guest’s dietary needs and/or preferences. They’re all gluten-free; vegan, and can be customized to our guest individual taste using mouthwatering spices like cumin, paprika, garlic powder and any other creative combinations we can conceive. Using a sweet potato base also provides an enormous nutrition boost, supplying vitamins A and C. Made with fiber packed, black beans, white beans and quinoa, these delectable burgers are just as filling and tasty as their beef counterparts. Another excellent carnivorous alternate is a grilled salmon burger, which we can tailor to our liking while keeping sodium our levels in check by spicing up our fillets with fresh garden picked herbs and seasonings before tossing them into the flame. We can also try garnishing our fish fillets with grilled fruit like pineapple, which inserts a hint of sweetness and is a great source of vitamin C and manganese. Another tasty lean protein option when grilling is low-carb ground chicken burgers, they’re blood sugar friendly and low in saturated fat, and can be prepared quick and easy.
When grilling most of us use some sort of oil based marinade and sugary or salty condiment to dress our meals, and none of these toppings are good for our health, making it essential for us to find other ways to enhance the flavor profiles of our creations. Most of our gardens offer a plethora of “green goodness” providing the perfect accomplice to our Independence Day feast. We should pick whatever our gardens gifts to us and add it to our menu. There’s nothing better for us than food plucked straight from the vine or pulled from the dirt when it comes to flavor and nutrition. We can sensibly fill our plates with freshly picked summer vegetables, making skewers with grilled chunks of yellow squash, zucchini, onions, mushrooms, peppers and cherry tomatoes infused with fresh herbs for a flavorsome and vibrant combination.
Although a majority of our 4th of July get-togethers will center on food and fireworks, at Gourmet Services Inc. we don’t want you to forget to take the time to enjoy your family and friends. Not only should we take time to observe and appreciate our countries freedoms, we should also examine our relationships and how we co-exist as a nation. Take this moment to generate remembrances that will be treasured for a lifetime. Have a great 4th of July weekend. Happy Birthday America!
