Whether K-12 or colleges and universities, schools have notoriously been known for serving not-so-healthy options, although that trend seems to be changing for the good. Recently it was announced that Auburn University launched its own food brand, not surprising given the university has been a leader in terms of research in food production, animal sciences, horticulture, fisheries, and biosystems engineering for more than 100 years.
The Auburn Foods brand was developed when local farmers and producers partnered with Tiger Dining so students could enjoy fresh foods that are sourced locally. The new Auburn Foods’ motto is “local, fresh, pure,” and according to reports, students are eating many foods grown in Auburn, or grown on their own campus, or those produced by Auburn University Alumni. Fish is supplied by Auburn University Fisheries, while the College of Agriculture provides meat and other products. Other departments at the university provide fresh food as well.
According to the university’s website, Auburn Foods provides students with options from salads and fish tacos to burgers and more, made of locally sourced ingredients that are pure and fresh. Students can grab a salad containing extreme green hydroponics at Terrell Market in Terrell Dining Hall, a smoothie or dinner from the hot line of fresh meat/vegetable choices at the Wellness Kitchen, gluten-free options at Plains2Plate at Lupton Hall, and fresh dining options at several other locations on campus.
