As a contract food services company with decades in the industry, we’re always interested in the latest trends in foods and beverages. Of late, it seems bone broth is a buzzword that’s created lots of interest among consumers for a variety of reasons, including its physical and mental health benefits. Whether in chicken soup, as a hot beverage, or prepared in other ways, bone broth has been the basis of many kitchens for decades, although those lacking culinary skills may not realize it.
Whether in hospital or college cafeterias or the corporate dining room, there are several health benefits of bone broth according to the generations of people who adamantly believe in the medicinal effects of bones because of the vitamins, collagen, protein, minerals, and other nutrients they contain.
Often referred to as a nutritional “superfood” by bone broth devotees, some of the healing properties include a healthier immune system, improved digestion, healthier skin and hair, strong bones, reduction in joint pain and inflammation, and protection against environmental toxins and infections.
Are the health benefits real, or just imagined? Some hospital chefs use what they call a “nutritional powerhouse” broth as a component of gravies, soups, sauces, and other menu items such as French dip sandwiches. Doctors who practice a type of medicine much like holistic medicine, functional medicine, believe in bone broth for its healing properties.
Whether bone broth actually provides health benefits seems to be a moot point, as many nutritionists believe that drinking the broth influences a person’s mindset, making them feel better whether they really do or not – a placebo effect. What’s important to note is that a positive mindset encourages people to eat a healthier diet all day, choosing healthy options over junk food and snacks. If bone broth contributes to a healthier mindset and attitude, it’s a good thing, regardless of any real health benefits.
