As a contract food service company in Atlanta, we know that the holidays aren’t exactly a time when most people try to diet or eat healthy. In fact, most people “stuff” themselves (pun intended) with turkey, ham, potatoes, stuffing, bread, and of course we can’t forget the pumpkin pie and other desserts! Over Thanksgiving, Christmas, and even the New Year’s holiday, we tend to eat an over-abundance of unhealthy foods. How can you make your celebration one that’s delicious, but healthier and more nutritious? We have a few tips.
First of all, don’t make the food the focus of your get-together. It should be about celebrating family, spending time together, and having fun! Enjoy a good movie together, decorate for the holidays, play a game, decorate the house, go caroling. There are lots of fun things you can do together as a family that don’t involve food.
Lots of families have adult children bring a dish. If this is the case, request they bring something healthy such as steamed veggies or fruit.
Eat smaller portions. Of course you want to indulge yourself, at least a little – but keep it to a limit. Eat smaller portions, enjoy a small piece of that delicious cake or pie. Eat sensibly instead of gorging on foods that are high in fat and calories.
Don’t forget the drinks. Cider, eggnog, and even soda pops or sweet tea are packed with calories. Instead, choose natural juices, unsweetened tea, or water.
When making a favorite family recipe, realize there are some smart swaps you can make with ingredients that reduce calories and fat without affecting taste. Some examples include:
When making quick bread or muffins, consider canned pumpkin, mashed bananas, or applesauce in place of margarine, oil, or butter.
Instead of sugar and salt, try using spices and herbs. Healthier, and more flavorful!
If your recipe calls for cream cheese, use the low-fat variety; for sour cream, use low-fat plain yogurt instead.
When a baked recipe calls for flour, choose whole-wheat instead of white.
Turkey, chicken, or even broiled or baked fish are healthy meat choices.
You can have a wonderful holiday gathering and enjoy healthier, tasty food! Choose the foods you want to indulge in wisely, and limit portions. It really isn’t all that difficult.
